Lekhi Spring Industries

Our workshop is located at B-21/7990/1 in Gali No. 4, and it’s a place where we really get our hands dirty. We focus on making springs, which is a lot more repetitive than you might think. The sound of the coiling machines is the constant soundtrack to our days. It’s a loud, metallic noise that you eventually stop hearing after a few months of working here. The Gali is quite narrow, so when a delivery truck comes, everything else has to stop to let it through. We’ve got piles of steel wire in different thicknesses cluttering up the corners. The floor is stained with oil from the machinery, and we mostly wear old clothes that we don't mind getting ruined. It’s a small operation, and we don't have a fancy office with air conditioning. We just have a desk in the corner where we keep the ledger and answer the phone when it rings. Most of the people working here have been around for years and they know the machines better than anyone. We don't do a lot of talking during the shift because of the noise, but we catch up during the tea breaks outside on the street. It’s a simple life of making parts that go into other machines. We don't worry about being modern or high-tech; we just make sure the springs are the right size and the machines keep turning without any trouble.
