I’ve been sitting here in Shikrapur Basti Jodhewal for quite a long time now. Most people around here know the shop just by looking at the sign. It’s not a huge place, but it’s where I spend most of my day working on watches. Sometimes it’s a simple battery change that takes two minutes, and other times it’s a mechanical watch that needs to be taken apart completely. My desk is usually covered in tiny screws and springs that you can barely see without that magnifying glass I wear on my eye. People stop by on their way home from work or while they’re out doing their shopping in the Basti. I don’t really have fancy displays or anything like that. It’s mostly just shelves with clocks and some straps hanging up. If a watch stops working, someone usually brings it in to see if it’s worth fixing. I try to be honest about it. If it’s junk, I’ll say so. But if it’s a good piece, I’ll get it running again. The traffic outside can get pretty loud, especially during the evenings, but I’ve gotten used to the noise. It’s just part of being here in Shikrapur. I handle all sorts of brands, old and new. There’s something nice about the sound of a bunch of clocks all ticking at different times in a small room. It makes the day go by faster while I’m leaning over the workbench.
