Jai Durga Gift Center is at B-7/460, right near the Books Market on Laxmi Road in Sherpur. Being so close to the market means there are always people walking past, especially students looking for things. The shop is filled with all kinds of items, from religious statues to small jewelry boxes. We try to keep things in order, but it’s hard when you have so many small pieces. There’s a faint smell of incense usually because the temple nearby is quite active. The counter is wooden and a bit worn down where people lean on it. We don’t have air conditioning, so we keep the door open and use a small table fan. Sometimes the noise from Laxmi Road gets a bit much, especially the horns from the trucks going toward the market. We have a lot of items that have been on the shelves for a while, and every now and then we find something we forgot we had. It’s just a family-run kind of place. We don’t use any computers; everything is written down in a ledger. If someone wants a gift wrapped, we use the brown paper we keep under the desk. It’s not fancy, but it gets the job done. Most of the people who come here are regulars who live in the Sherpur area. We just keep the shop going day by day, nothing more to it. Usually, we close up right when the streetlights start flickering on and the market noise begins to settle down for the night.
