I spend most of my day at 3629 St. No. 4 Chet Singh Nagar Gill Road. That’s where Kulwant Furniture is. The shop is full of wood—planks leaning against the walls, sawdust on the floor, and unfinished chairs everywhere. It’s a noisy place when the saws are going. You have to shout to be heard over the machines. Gill Road is always busy with trucks and people moving stuff. We’ve been in Chet Singh Nagar for a long time now. My clothes always have that woody smell, even after I go home. We don't have a showroom with bright lights. People just walk into the workshop and see what we’re making. Sometimes we’re working on a big bed frame, and other times it’s just small repairs. My hands have a few scars from the tools over the years, but that’s part of the trade. We don't use any high-tech stuff, just the same methods we’ve always used. It takes time to get things right. If the weather is humid, the wood acts up, and we have to wait. It’s not a fast process. We just keep working until the piece looks like it should. The neighbors are mostly other workshops, so we all get along. It’s a hard way to make a living, but it’s what we know. We just focus on the wood.
