Being right at the Qaiserbagh Crossing in Lucknow means we deal with a lot of noise. There is always a horn honking or someone shouting outside our window. This place is all about glasses and contact lenses, so we have rows of frames sitting in glass cases that we have to clean every morning. People come in squinting because they can't see the signs on the buses out there. We take them to the back where the lights are dim to check their eyes. It’s a small shop and clinic combined into one. The floor is a bit worn down from all the foot traffic over the years. Lucknow is hot for most of the year, so our air conditioner works pretty hard, even if it makes a bit of a rattling sound. We see all kinds of people, from students to old folks who lost their spectacles. It’s not a fancy boutique where you get coffee while you wait. You just come in, pick what you need, and wait for your turn. The crossing outside is always a mess of rickshaws and cars, so once people get inside, they usually look a bit relieved to be out of the sun. We keep things simple and just focus on getting the lenses right for whoever walks through the door today. It is a bit cramped when it gets crowded, but we make it work.
