We are located over at Unit Number 5 in the Banerjee Brothers Pottery area in Chinhat. It’s a place with a lot of history when it comes to clay and kilns. We just call ourselves Clay Works because that’s exactly what we do here. We work with clay all day long, from morning until it gets dark. It’s a messy business, and our clothes are always stained with grey or red mud. We don't mind it. There’s something nice about taking a lump of earth and making it into something useful like a pot or a tile. We aren't a big industrial plant. It’s more of a workshop where things happen slowly. The kilns take time to heat up and even more time to cool down. We spend a lot of time waiting and watching. Chinhat has changed over the years, but the smell of firing clay is still the same as it always was. We aren't trying to be some high-end art gallery. Most of what we make is for everyday use in people's homes. Sometimes a batch doesn't come out right, and we have to start all over again. That’s just the way it goes with pottery. We share the space with other units, so there’s always someone around to talk to. It’s a quiet life for the most part, except for the sound of the wheels spinning.
