Devi Brick

Sengaraiyur is where we do our work, specifically along the Alangudimahajanam Road. It is a bit out of the way for some people, but for us, it is just where the day happens. We have a good amount of space out here at number 85. The road is usually pretty quiet, which is a nice change compared to the bigger towns nearby. We spend all of our time out in the open air. The bricks don't make themselves, so we are always on our feet and moving around. It’s a lot of repetitive motion, just stacking and unstacking all day long. You find a rhythm after a while and the time goes by faster. The sun can be real heavy in the afternoons, so we try to get the hardest lifting done as early as possible. We don't have any fancy brochures or big promises to give people. We just have the bricks we make right here. People drive down the road and see what we are doing and they stop if they need something. It’s a very local way of doing things, I guess. We know the land around here pretty well and the soil is just right for our needs. We don’t really think of ourselves as a big business. We just think about getting through the day and making sure the stacks are straight. It’s simple, but it’s what we know how to do.
