Out here in Dulia Gaon, things move at a bit of a slower pace compared to the big cities. Valmiki Vidyakanan Jr. College is located in Dhakuakhana, which is part of North Lakhimpur in Assam. We are at the 787055 pin code area. It’s a quiet spot, surrounded by a lot of greenery. The students who come here are mostly from the local villages around North Lakhimpur. Since it is a junior college, the students are at that age where they are starting to think about what comes next after school. We don't have any flashy facilities, just the basic classrooms and a place for the students to gather. The weather can be quite unpredictable in Assam, so we spend a lot of time dealing with the rain and the humidity. But the students are used to it and they show up anyway. We have a small staff of teachers who live nearby. It’s a very local operation. We don’t really do much in the way of advertising. Most people know where Valmiki Vidyakanan Jr. College is because their older siblings or neighbors came here before. It’s just a simple place for learning. We open the doors early in the morning and wait for the students to cycle in from the surrounding areas. The focus is just on the daily lessons and getting through the syllabus. It’s a practical life we lead here in Dhakuakhana, just trying to help the local kids with their studies as best as we can.
