Out here in Gerukamukh, things are a bit different than the city. We are Nhpc Ltd. and we've been working on the Slproject for a long time. 2000Mw is the big goal, but mostly we are just dealing with the day-to-day work here in Dhemaji district. Assam is beautiful but the weather can be a real challenge for the work we do. Living and working at this site means you get used to the sounds of the project. It’s not a standard office job. Instead of a typical building, we spend a lot of our time outdoors or in the temporary housing. People here know us as the dam folks. The address at 787035 is where everything happens. With people coming in and out from different parts of the country, it's always busy. Trucks and equipment are everywhere on this site. Sometimes it feels like a small town of its own. Eating together and talking about the progress is how we spend our evenings. Because the terrain is tough, it is slow going sometimes. We just keep at it. Rushing things doesn't make sense when you’re dealing with the river. We are just a group of people trying to finish what we started. Dhemaji is a long way from the headquarters but this is where the real work gets done. Handling whatever comes up, from rain delays to technical issues, is just life. Since the work began, we've seen the seasons change many times. The local market provides most of our supplies. It's a simple existence, and we are just glad when the sun comes out.
