Spiti Horticulture Agriculture Farmer Producer Company Limited

If you’ve ever been to Spiti, you know how tough the ground can be. Our farmer producer company is located right near the Tabo Monastery, which is one of the oldest places around here. We work out of Subodh Kumar Bodh’s place in Tabo village. Farming at this altitude is a whole different game compared to the plains. We only have a few months when the ground isn't frozen solid, so we have to be incredibly busy during the short summer. We grow things like peas and barley, and some horticulture stuff that can survive the cold. Most of our members are from around Kaza and the smaller villages nearby. We spend a lot of time worrying about the water and the snow. The roads are often closed in the winter, so we have to get all our business done and our products shipped out before the passes shut down. It’s a quiet life up here, and we mostly just focus on our own plots of land. Being part of the company helps us stay organized, even if we are all spread out across the mountains. We meet when we can, usually over some hot tea, to talk about prices and how to get the trucks up here. It’s not a fancy operation, just some hardy people trying to make a living in a very cold place where the air is thin and the sun is bright.
