We’ve been operating Sri Sai Krupa Ambulance out of Kothapet for several years now. Our home base is right in the middle of the neighborhood, which is a busy place to be. There is always a lot of activity on the streets here, so we have to stay alert. We keep our ambulance parked and ready so we can head out the moment someone calls for help. It’s a small operation, just a few of us who know the Kothapet area and all its little shortcuts. We aren't part of some big medical corporation; we’re just local people with a couple of vans. The vehicles take a bit of a beating because of the rough roads and the constant traffic, but we do our best to keep the engines running well. We usually pick a spot near the main crossroads to park so that we have a clear path to the main roads. Sometimes we are just helping an older neighbor get to their doctor’s appointment, and other times the situation is more serious. We don’t have a big mission statement or any promotional slogans; we just show up when we are needed and do the driving. The phone can ring at any hour, so we take turns staying awake through the night. It can be exhausting sometimes, but it’s the job we chose. Most people in Kothapet recognize us by now. We try to keep our rates fair for the local families because we live here too and understand the situation.
