Our place is at 151 Kamaraj Road in Kumbakonam. If you have ever been to this part of town, you know it can get pretty lively. Muthu Fisheries has been around for a while now, and most of the locals know where we are. We deal with fish, so our day starts way before most people are even thinking about waking up. The mornings are the busiest time when the fresh catch comes in. Everything has to be sorted and moved quickly because the heat does not do any favors to seafood. It is a lot of wet floors and heavy crates. We do not wear suits or anything like that; it is mostly boots and practical clothes that can get messy. Our office is just a small corner where we keep the books and take orders. It smells like the sea, which I guess is obvious, but you really notice it after a few hours. We work with a lot of different fishermen and vendors, so there is always someone stopping by to haggle over prices or just share some news. It is a tough business because you are always dealing with something that spoils fast, so you have to be on your toes. We just try to get the fish from the water to the people as fast as we can. It is honest work, even if it leaves you tired and smelling a bit funny by the end of the day.
