If you drive down Chennai Road towards Sanavour in Kumbakonam, you’ll find our college. We are focused on education, mostly training people who want to become teachers later on. It’s a quiet enough spot in Tamil Nadu, 612001. The building is easy to spot from the road. Inside, it's mostly just classrooms and people carrying around big stacks of books and files. We spend a lot of time on the paperwork needed for these courses. The weather in Kumbakonam can get really hot, so we usually have the windows wide open to catch any breeze that comes from the road. Students come from all over the local area. Some stay nearby and others travel a bit of a distance. It's a practical place. We don't have any fancy decorations on the walls, just the stuff we need for teaching. Sometimes the power goes out and we just have to wait it out while sitting in the shade. Everyone knows each other's names here, which makes it feel smaller than it actually is. It’s just a regular college for regular people. We open the gates early and the day goes by in a blur of lectures and coffee breaks. By the time evening rolls around, the place clears out and it's just the sound of the traffic on Chennai Road again. The local shops nearby are where we usually get our lunch if we haven't brought anything from home. It's just a steady way of life here on the outskirts of the town.
