Perummandi is a quiet enough place most mornings until the traffic picks up on Ayekulam Road. We’ve been at number 44 for quite some time now, just doing our thing with the trading business. The shop floor is usually a bit dusty because of the road work nearby, but we try to keep it decent. Usually, the day starts with a quick tea from the stall down the street before we open up the shutters. It’s mostly just us here, moving stock around and talking to the people who drop by. We don’t have a fancy office or anything like that. There’s an old wooden desk that’s seen better days and a few chairs for when someone wants to sit for a minute. Most of the time, we’re just busy checking what came in and what needs to go out. The fans overhead make a clicking noise that you get used to after an hour. Sometimes the neighbors come in just to chat about the weather or the price of things lately. It’s a simple setup. We don’t go for anything flashy because that’s not really how things work around here. If you walk past the Perummandi junction, you’ll see our sign, though it’s faded a bit from the sun over the years. It’s just work, really. We keep the books in the back room and try to stay organized, even when it gets a bit hectic with the deliveries.
