Green Hills

This place is located in Village Rohtan, which is a bit of a journey from the main parts of Shimla. You have to go through Mandal to get here. We call it Green Hills because that’s exactly what surrounds us on every side. It’s a family-run thing on our own land. Life up here is a bit different than in the towns. We don’t have shops right around the corner, so we have to plan ahead. My brother and I handle the daily work, whether it’s fixing a fence or looking after the trees. It’s a lot of physical labor, but the air is clean and it keeps us healthy. The post office is down in Mandal, and we only go there once or twice a week. We’ve been in this village for as long as anyone can remember. We don’t have a big office or anything corporate. It’s just our home and the land we work on. Sometimes the weather gets really rough, especially in winter, and we get snowed in for a few days. We just keep the fire going and wait it out. It’s a very simple existence. We don’t have much to say about ourselves, really. We just live here and do the work that needs doing. If someone happens to find their way up to Rohtan, they’ll find us just being ourselves and getting on with the day.
