Being out here at 3 Mangattan Street 1 in the Vellore District means we’re a bit away from the main city buzz, which is mostly fine with us. Esaar Footwear has been operating from this spot for a while now. The street is usually pretty quiet, except for when the delivery trucks try to squeeze through the narrow turns. Inside, it’s mostly the smell of leather and glue, which you get used to after about five minutes. We spend most of our time at the benches, cutting and stitching. It’s hard on the hands, and by the end of the shift, everyone is ready to head home. We aren't trying to be the biggest factory around, just trying to make shoes that don't fall apart after a week of walking. Sometimes we run out of a certain size or a specific material and have to wait for the next shipment to come in, which can be frustrating for everyone. The lighting in the back room is a bit dim, but we know where everything is by heart now. We don’t really have a big sign out front, just the address and the door. It’s a practical place for people who just want to get their work done and go home to their families. We drink a lot of coffee to stay sharp during the afternoon slump, especially when the heat in Vellore starts to pick up. It’s just us doing our thing.
