Being over here by Kota Junction on Mala Road means we see a lot of people coming and going. The trains bring in a crowd, and then there are the locals who live just behind the station. We have got the usual trays of sweets laid out. It gets really hot in the back where the large pans are kept for boiling milk and sugar. You can usually smell the frying from down the street. We start early, way before the first big train arrives, because people want something to take with them on their journey. The floor gets a bit sticky by midday, no matter how much we sweep it. We have some benches, but most people just stand and eat or get their boxes packed to go. Sometimes we run out of the popular items by four in the afternoon. It is a busy corner, and the traffic noise from the Mala Road side never really stops. We do not have fancy air conditioning, just some ceiling fans that hum all day long. The glass cases are full of whatever we made fresh that morning. It is just a standard sweet shop. We have seen the junction change a lot over the years, but we are still sitting here in the same spot, serving whoever walks through the door. The business has its good days and slow days like anywhere else.
