It’s a small place here in New Colony Gumanpura. I usually get here around ten in the morning and pull up the metal shutters. The street is already a bit noisy by then with people going to work. Inside, Shreenath Gift Shopee is packed with all sorts of things on the shelves. There are rows of coffee mugs, some picture frames that have been there a while, and a lot of plastic toys in bright colors. I spend a good amount of time dusting because the road outside brings in a lot of dirt. It’s mostly neighbors who come in, maybe a parent looking for a birthday present for a school friend of their kid. We don’t have much room to move around when more than three people are inside at once. The lighting is a bit dim in the back corner where the bigger boxes are kept. Sometimes I sit on the stool by the door just to get some fresh air. People ask for wrapping paper a lot, and I try to keep a few different colors of the shiny kind. It’s just a regular shop where we sell what people in Gumanpura need for small occasions. In the afternoons when it gets really hot, things slow down and I usually just listen to the radio or talk to the guy who runs the tea stall nearby. It is not a fancy setup, just a lot of stuff piled up on old wooden racks.
