We open up the shutters at India Motor Parts & Accessories at New Motor Market 9 every morning around ten. Most days, the air is already thick with the smell of engine oil and old tires from the other shops nearby. Our shelves are packed high with all sorts of components, from small nuts and bolts to heavy-duty clutch plates. It gets pretty loud once the mechanics start showing up with their lists. Someone is usually asking for a part we haven't seen in years, so we spend time digging through the back rows. The floor is concrete and stays cool even when the sun hits the front of the store. We keep a small stool by the counter for when things slow down. Most of the people coming in are regulars who have been working in this market as long as we have. We don't do much fancy talking here. If a part works, it works. Sometimes the electricity goes out in the afternoon, and we just wait it out while chatting with the neighbor. It's a simple way to spend the day, surrounded by metal and grease. By the time we close up, our hands are usually stained black from handling the inventory. That’s just how it goes when you’re dealing with motor parts all day. We’ve been at this spot for quite a while now, and the market hasn't changed much, which is fine by us.
