Down in Joridhourpur, things move a bit slower than in the bigger towns. Sarguja Karmayogi Agrofed Farmer Producer Company Limited is based over at Shiv Prasad’s place in Hatak Sai. It’s a simple setup, mostly just some rooms where we keep our records and meet up to talk about the crops. You can hear the goats and chickens from the yard while we work. The road to get here isn't always the smoothest, especially after a heavy rain, but people find their way eventually. We spend a lot of our time chatting with the farmers who come by to see what’s happening. There isn't a lot of fancy furniture or air conditioning around here. We just use what we have and try to get the work done before it gets too dark. It’s a lot of manual tracking and writing things down by hand in ledgers. Sometimes the tea runs out, which is a bit of a tragedy in the middle of a long afternoon. Shiv Prasad’s house is a bit of a landmark for us, so everyone knows where to turn when they enter the village. We aren’t trying to be some big corporate entity; we’re just a bunch of people from the community working together. It’s practical work, mostly. We deal with the dirt and the weather and the markets as best as we can. Every day feels a bit different depending on the season.
