Our group works out of a small office at E 2 R B 96 on Officer Lane. This is in Balimela, which is in the state of Orissa. It’s a quiet spot, tucked away from the main bustle. We do ground engineering, which basically means we spend our time thinking about what’s under the dirt. The building we are in is quite plain, just like the other ones on this lane. We’ve got some heavy boots by the door and plenty of hard hats on the shelves. It’s not a place where you’d expect to see people in ties. Most of us are in work clothes ready to head to a site. The air here in Balimela feels different than the city. We have a small kitchen area where we make tea and eat our packed lunches. Sometimes the phone line acts up because we are a bit remote, but we manage with mobiles. We keep our records in big metal cabinets that have been here as long as the office has. We don't bother with fancy decor. There's a big map of the district pinned to the wall with some coffee stains on the corner. It's a practical workplace for people who don't mind getting their shoes dusty. We start early when the sun comes up to get a head start on the day’s tasks. It’s a steady kind of life working here. We get used to the bugs and the heat after a while.
