Venus Controls Switchgear Pvt. Ltd. is on the second floor of 3 A Pollock Street. It’s one of those old buildings where the stairs are a bit steep and you can hear everything happening on the floor below. We’ve got a lot of heavy metal cabinets and electrical parts scattered around the workspace. It’s not the kind of place where you’d want to wear a nice suit because you’re likely to get some grease or dust on it. The windows look out onto Pollock Street, which is always chaotic with people moving goods back and forth. We spend our hours looking at diagrams and wiring up panels. It’s quiet work in some ways, but there is always the sound of a drill or someone hammering something into place. Being on the second floor means we have to haul everything up, which is a bit of a workout. We don’t have any fancy signs in the lobby, just the name on the door upstairs. The desks are piled with technical manuals and half-finished projects. We usually have a fan going because it gets quite stuffy in the afternoons. It’s just a group of us who know our way around a circuit board. We don't do much in the way of talking; we just focus on getting the switchgear assembled correctly before the end of the shift. It’s steady work in a part of town that never really sleeps.
