You’ll find Universal Bearing & Engineering Co on the ground floor of 1 Bonfield Lane, near the Calcutta Gpo. Being on the ground floor is great because we don’t have to deal with stairs or lifts, which is a relief when we are moving heavy parts around. The lane is quite narrow and it’s always full of people and carts. It’s an old part of the city, and our building has that classic look with thick walls and high ceilings. Inside, it’s a bit dark because the lane doesn't let in much sunlight, but we have plenty of lamps. We mostly deal with bearings and engineering bits, so there’s usually a thin layer of oil on some of the surfaces. It’s a messy business, but that’s just how it goes. We have some old wooden counters where we talk to people who come in. There’s no fancy waiting area or air conditioning that works perfectly, but we have a good fan that keeps the air moving. Our staff has been here for years, and we know our inventory by heart. We don’t bother with much advertising; people usually find us because they’ve been coming here for a long time. It’s a small, dusty, busy place where we just focus on the task at hand. We drink a lot of coffee and keep the paperwork in folders that are starting to fray at the edges. It gets a bit noisy when the neighbors are unloading trucks.
