If you find yourself on Grant Lane, you know it’s a busy spot. We’ve been at 1A for a long time now, and United Cycle Co. has basically become part of the furniture in this corner of Calcutta. The shop is usually full of bikes, parts, and a bit of grease. It’s not a quiet place, that’s for sure. Between the horns outside and the sound of someone testing a bell or a brake, there’s a constant hum. We aren't trying to be one of those high-end showrooms you see in malls. This is a real cycle shop where things actually get handled. We sell all sorts of stuff, from the basic bikes kids use to things for people who ride to work every single day. My hands are usually a bit dirty from checking a chain or helping someone fit a tire. People come in asking all sorts of questions, and we just give them the straight answer. We’ve got stacks of tires and rims leaning against the walls, and sometimes it’s a bit of a squeeze to get through. But it works for us. We know our regulars by name, and they know where to find us when something starts rattling on their frame. It’s a lot of work keeping up with the demand in this city, but we just take it one bike at a time without making a big fuss.
