We are based on the ground floor of Chowringhee Mansion at 30, Jawaharlal Nehru Road. It’s an old building with high ceilings and thick walls, which keeps it a bit cooler than the street outside. Being on the ground floor means we see a lot of people passing by the windows all day. Unique International Pvt. Ltd. is a trading company, so our office is usually full of boxes and samples of things we are moving. It’s not a polished showroom. We have old wooden desks and filing cabinets that have seen better days. There’s a lot of back and forth with the ports and the transport companies. We spend a lot of our time making sure the documentation for the customs is perfect. If one paper is wrong, everything gets stuck. The traffic on Jawaharlal Nehru Road is always heavy, so we can hear the buses and horns all day long. We have a small pantry in the back where we make our own tea and coffee. It’s a small team, and we’ve all worked together for a long time. We don’t use any corporate jargon here. We just talk about the shipments and the costs. Sometimes things go wrong with a delivery, and we have to spend the whole day on the phone fixing it. It’s just the nature of international trade. We stay busy and try to keep things moving.
