Being right beside the Kalighat Fire Station on Hazra Road means we hear sirens quite often throughout the day. It is a busy stretch of road, and there is always someone pulling over because their car is making a weird noise or a tyre looks a bit low. We have been at 114/3B for quite some time. The shop is filled with the smell of new rubber and the heavy weight of lead-acid batteries stacked in the corners. It gets quite hot in the afternoons, especially when the sun hits the pavement outside. Most of our time is spent moving things around to make space or checking the stock that came in that morning. We don’t have a big fancy waiting room or anything like that. People usually just stand around or find a stool while we look at their battery levels. The fire station next door is a good landmark, so folks usually find us without too much trouble. Hazra Road is never really quiet, even on weekends. Sometimes the rain makes things difficult because we have to move everything inside quickly. We just keep things moving and try to help the people who stop by. It is a straightforward job. There are always stacks of old tyres waiting to be picked up and new ones taking their place. It is just the way the shop runs day in and day out.
