Torque To Overcome Academic Friction is based at 6/C on the 2nd floor of Jagbandhu Boral Lane. This is in Kolkata, 700007 area. We are right opposite the Marwari Relief Society, which is a big landmark that everyone knows. The lane is quite narrow, like many old parts of Kolkata, so you have to be careful when walking through. Getting up to the second floor is a bit of a climb every morning, but it is what we do. The space inside is simple. We have classrooms set up with whatever furniture we could fit. It is a bit of an old building, so the walls have some character and the floors are worn down from years of use. We don’t have any fancy air conditioning systems or modern art on the walls. It is just a place where we sit down with students and go over their lessons. The sounds from the street come up through the windows—horns, vendors, and people talking. It feels very much like a part of the city. We spend our time writing on the boards and organizing our notes. It is a very hands-on kind of place. People don’t come here for the looks; they come because they know where we are and what we do in this little corner of Kolkata. We keep things moving despite the academic friction.
