You can find us at 6A, Balaram Ghosh Street. This part of North Kolkata has so much history in the walls of the buildings. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has this office right in the middle of a very old neighborhood. The streets around here are quite narrow, and there is always something going on, whether it’s a rickshaw passing by or people chatting on their way to the market. The 700004 pin code is one of those places where the buildings are tall and close together. Inside 6A, it’s mostly just desks, wooden chairs, and stacks of paper that seem to never get smaller. It’s an old building, so it has high ceilings and thick walls that stay a bit cooler than the street outside. We spend the day dealing with various local matters and paperwork. The bells from the nearby temples or the sound of the tram in the distance are just part of the background noise. It’s not a modern glass office by any means. There is dust on the higher shelves and the floors show the wear of many years. We drink a lot of tea while we work. People come in and out all day with different queries. We just try to get through the files one by one. It’s a busy, functional place that feels very much like the rest of this part of the city. No frills, just the daily grind in a very old part of town.
