Our office is tucked away at 116 Regent Palace in the Rani Kutti area of Tollygunj. It’s a busy part of Kolkata, and you can always hear the trams and the general hum of the city from the windows. We’ve been operating out of this spot for quite some time now. The building is an older one, but it works for what we need. Inside, there are piles of site reports and rolls of drawings leaning against the walls. It isn’t a place with fancy furniture or glass walls. We have basic desks and chairs that have seen better days. Most of us here are focused on the technical side of things, like checking foundation specs or coordinating with the guys out on the sites. The morning starts with a lot of noise as everyone settles in and the phones start ringing. There’s a small shop nearby where we get our samosas and tea in the afternoon. It’s a ritual that keeps us going. The streets outside are usually crowded with people heading to the metro station. Sometimes the monsoon rain makes it a bit of a mess to get to the front door, but we manage. We aren’t trying to impress anyone with the decor. We just come in, do the work that needs doing for the projects, and head home. It’s a lot of talk about concrete, steel, and deadlines. That’s just the daily life here in Tollygunj.
