Down at 24/2 Karaya Road, you’ll find our workshop. You can usually smell the leather before you even get to the door. It’s a strong, earthy scent that we’ve all gotten used to over the years. Rex Leather Inc. is a small operation, mostly just a few of us working at our benches. The building is older, but it serves us well enough for what we do. There are stacks of hides in the corners and scraps of leather everywhere. We use old-fashioned tools mostly, things that have lasted for decades. The floor is stained from years of dyes and oils, which shows how much work has been done here. We aren't the type to have a polished front office. Most of the space is taken up by cutting tables and sewing machines. Sometimes it gets a bit noisy when everyone is working at once, but that’s just how it is. We spend a lot of time checking the quality of the skins because no two pieces of leather are exactly the same. It takes patience to get it right. Lunch breaks are usually taken right at the desks or on the front steps. We know the neighbors and they know the sound of our machines. It’s a steady kind of life, working with our hands every day. We just focus on the job in front of us and try to get every piece finished properly.
