Being in Burrabazar means you're always in the middle of a crowd. Our place, Premlata Silver, is tucked away at 5 Kanulal Lane. If you’ve ever been down these lanes in Kolkata, you know how narrow they are. You have to watch out for the coolies carrying big loads on their heads and the hand-pulled carts. Our shop is mostly about silver, and we’ve been here for a good while. The walls are a bit old and the paint is peeling in the corners, but the safe is solid. We spend the morning unpacking things and checking the weight of the silver items that come in. It’s a lot of manual work, honestly. We don't have a big marketing team; it's just us handling the orders and talking to the people who manage to find their way through the maze of the market. It gets really hot in the summer, and the little fan we have just moves the warm air around, but that’s just how it is in Burrabazar. We keep some water in a clay pot to stay cool. Sometimes customers stay for a long time just to get away from the sun and chat. We don't mind. We just keep track of the silver prices and do our daily tasks. It’s a busy, noisy, and somewhat messy way to earn a living, but it feels right being in the heart of the city’s trade. We just keep the shop open and the silver polished.
