Our building is an old one, and it has that specific smell of old wood and paper that you find in this part of the city. We have been operating as a mercantile company from here for quite a while. It’s a very traditional neighborhood. We don't have any big signs or flashing lights. Most people who come to see us already know the way through the narrow streets. The office itself is pretty basic with wooden desks and stacks of ledgers. We don't really go for the whole modern office look. It’s more about just getting the daily trade and paperwork done. The sounds of the street outside—the bells of the rickshaws and people talking—always drift in through the windows. It can get quite warm in the summer, but we have some old ceiling fans that do the trick. We’ve seen the neighborhood change over the decades, but our little corner of Durga Pithuri Lane stays mostly the same. We take pride in just being a steady part of the local business scene. It’s not a fancy life, but it’s ours and we’ve been doing it this way for a long time now. We usually close up early on Saturdays to spend time with our families.
