We sit here in Jamuna Bhawan most days. Ezra Street is always a bit of a nightmare if you’re trying to move quickly. There are people everywhere and handcarts blocking the way. Our spot is up on the fourth floor, in Room 14. It’s a lot of stairs if the lift is acting up, which happens more than we’d like. Usually, the morning starts with opening up the shutters and seeing what arrived the night before. We spend a lot of time on the phone or just sorting through boxes. It’s not a fancy place. The walls could use a new coat of paint, but we are too busy to get around to it. Most people who come here know exactly where to find us because we’ve been in this same room for quite a while now. You get used to the noise from the street below. Sometimes it feels like the whole city is trying to buy something at once right under our window. We just keep things moving, checking the ledgers and making sure the orders are ready for whoever is coming to pick them up later in the afternoon. It gets hot in the summer, but we have a small fan that does its best. We just focus on the work at hand and getting through the day without too many hiccups. If someone stops by, they usually just walk in and ask for what they need. It’s a straightforward way to spend the day in a busy market.
