Kolkata is a noisy city, especially in this part of town, but we have gotten used to the sound of the trams and the cars outside our window. Our office is in building 88/H/3. It is an old place with high ceilings and that specific smell of old paper and dust that you find in these parts of 700016. We spend most of our mornings checking the manifest and seeing what arrived overnight. It is just a small team here. We do not have fancy leather chairs or a big lobby. Instead, there are stacks of parcels and a few desks that have seen better days. When customers come in, they usually just want to know if their letter will get to where it is going by tomorrow. We do our best to tell them what the schedule looks like. Sometimes we are running behind because of the rain or a strike, but that is just how life is here. We sit under the fans and try to stay cool while we sort through the mail. It is practical work. We do not spend much time on decorations because there is not much room anyway. Most of our day is spent on the phone or writing out slips. It is a quiet routine in a loud neighborhood, and we have been at it for a long time now.
