National Furniture

We are located at 50 Radha Bazar Lane, which is right in the backside of Lalbazar near the Calcutta Gpo. It’s a very old and crowded part of the city. National Furniture has been squeezed into this lane for many years. The street is so narrow that you can barely fit a small car, let alone a big truck. We have to carry most of our wood and finished pieces by hand or on small carts. The shop has that heavy smell of timber and varnish that hits you as soon as you walk in. We don't have much space, so we stack things high. It’s a bit of a maze inside. We don't have a website or a social media person. We just have our tools and our hands. Most of our customers are people whose parents also bought furniture from us. We sit on stools and talk to whoever comes in. Sometimes it gets dark in the lane even during the day because the buildings are so close together. We use old bulbs to see what we are doing. It’s hard work, and the heat in the summer can be tough, but we’ve been here so long we don't know anything else. We just make the furniture and hope it lasts a lifetime for the people who buy it. That’s what matters to us.
