Our office for Pragati Instrumentation is tucked away in Jadavpur, on Ibrahimpur Road. It’s a busy part of Kolkata, especially with the university crowd and the markets nearby. We operate out of 80/1, sharing some space at H.S. Ganguly’s place. It’s an old house, the kind you see all over this part of the city, with the heavy wooden doors and narrow stairs. We deal with technical instruments, so there are always boxes of sensors or gauges sitting around the hallway. It’s not a showroom. We spend most of our time at the desks answering calls or checking the gear before it goes out to a client. The tea guy comes by twice a day and that is usually when we take a break. Working in Jadavpur means dealing with the traffic and the rain, but we like it here. It’s home. We have a small staff, just a few people who know their way around electronics and shipping labels. Most of our neighbors are families who have lived here for decades. They see us coming in early and leaving late. We don’t put up big signs or anything. People who need us usually find us through word of mouth or old contacts. It’s a bit cramped when we get a big shipment in, but we make it work. Just a regular Kolkata business trying to keep things moving despite the humidity.
