Out here in Serampore, things move a bit slower than they do in the main city of Kolkata. Our office on Barabagan Lane is situated in a quiet part of the Hooghly district. It is not a very large place, but we have enough room to manage our local projects. The building is simple, and we have a small yard where we sometimes keep supplies. A lot of the staff live nearby, so most of us just walk or take a rickshaw to get here in the morning. Being near Mallickpara means we are close to the river, and you can sometimes feel a bit of a breeze on the hotter days. The office inside is pretty basic. We have some old desks, a few cupboards for the site files, and a map of the district pinned to the wall. We spend a lot of time talking to local contractors and checking on how the work is progressing at various sites nearby. It can get a bit muddy around the entrance when it rains, but we just put down some bricks and keep moving. We aren't trying to impress anyone with a fancy office. We just need a place to coordinate our work and make sure the paperwork is in order. It’s a friendly environment where everyone knows each other’s families, and we usually share some biscuits and tea every afternoon while we catch up.
