We're down here on the ground floor of 42a Lake View Road. It isn't a very big space, but it's where we do all our sewing and fixing. You can hear the machines humming from the street if the door is open. Most days start with a big pile of clothes that need something done to them. Some people want their trousers shortened, and others have a favorite shirt with a hole that needs patching up. We spend a lot of time bent over the tables with measuring tapes around our necks. It gets a bit cramped when there are too many rolls of fabric leaning against the walls. The light isn't always the best in the back, so we have extra lamps everywhere. Outside on Lake View Road, people are always rushing by to get to the water or their offices, but inside it’s just the sound of needles hitting fabric. We don't have a fancy waiting area or anything like that. There’s just a chair for someone to sit while we check a measurement. It’s a simple way to make a living, honestly. We’ve been doing this for long enough that we know which fabrics are going to be a pain to work with. Sometimes the thread tangles up and we have to start a seam all over again. That's just how it goes in a tailor shop. We keep our scissors sharp and our tea cold.
