Jadav Tailors has been in the Mehta Building on Canning Street for a long time. Our space is 55/d, and it is tucked away among a lot of other offices and shops. Canning Street is always loud with people shouting and horns honking, but once you get inside the building, it’s a bit calmer. We have our sewing machines set up in a row. The floor is old wood and it creaks when you walk across it. There are piles of fabric everywhere because customers bring in all sorts of things they want fixed or made. We spend most of the day hunched over the needles. My glasses usually slip down my nose because of the sweat. It is a very busy life in this part of the city. We don't have fancy signs or a big marketing team. Most people just know us because they’ve been coming here for years. We keep our scissors sharpened and our thread stocked up. Sometimes we run out of a certain color and one of us has to run down the street to the market to find a match. Lunch is usually eaten quickly at the back of the shop. By the end of the day, there are thread clippings all over our clothes. It’s honest work and we just try to make sure the fit is right for whoever is coming to pick up their clothes.
