Our place is at No. 3/ 3 Maharshi Debendra Road, right in the Lohapatty area. As you can guess from the name of the neighborhood, it’s all about iron and heavy materials around here. H. K. Paul Bros. Pvt. Ltd. has been around for quite a while, and the building definitely shows its age. We have thick walls and heavy doors, and there is always a fine layer of red dust over everything. Working here means dealing with a lot of heavy lifting and loud noises from the street where trucks are constantly being loaded. We have an old office area where we keep the big ledgers and do the accounts. It’s not a modern setup with sleek furniture; we have heavy wooden desks that have been here longer than most of the staff. We spend a lot of time talking to contractors and people looking for supplies. It’s a straightforward kind of life, no frills or fancy presentations. We start early in the morning before the heat gets too bad, and we usually wrap things up when the market starts to quiet down in the evening. There’s a lot of history in these walls, and we just keep the business going one day at a time. Sometimes the rain leaks in near the back door, but we just put a bucket down and keep working. The chai wallah comes by at four, which is usually the highlight of our afternoon.
