Down at 1, Andul Raj Road in Kalighat, you’ll find our little shop. Ghosh Furniture has been a part of this street for quite some time. It’s not a big fancy place. Most of the time, the sidewalk is partially blocked by pieces of wood or a finished wardrobe waiting for the rickshaw. We make things the old way. We use solid wood when we can get it and spend a lot of time sanding things down by hand. My hands are rough from all the work, but that’s just how it is. People from the neighborhood come to us because they know we aren't going anywhere. We’ve seen kids grow up and come back to buy furniture for their own houses. It’s a nice feeling. The shop is small and dark inside, so we do a lot of the finishing work out near the door where the light is better. Kalighat is always loud and busy, especially during the festivals. We just keep working through it. Sometimes a customer wants a design we’ve never done before, so we have to figure it out as we go. It’s not always perfect, but it’s sturdy and it lasts for a long time. We don't have a big marketing team. We just rely on the fact that if we do a decent job, people will tell their cousins about us. That’s how we’ve stayed open all these years.
