Evelyn Merchants Private Limited

Our office is over on Ganesh Chandra Avenue. It’s on the 5th floor, number 7. If the lift is working, it’s a quick trip up, but sometimes you have to take the stairs, which is quite a climb in this humidity. Kolkata is always noisy down below, but it’s a bit quieter up here. We spend most of our time dealing with different goods. It’s a merchant business, so it’s a lot of buying from one person and selling to another. We have files stacked everywhere on the desks. Sometimes it feels like we are drowning in paper. My desk is right by the window, so I can see the traffic. We’ve been here for a good bit of time. It’s mostly just us sitting around the phones and computers, making sure things get moved from point A to point B. We don’t really do anything flashy. It’s just trade. If a customer calls, we answer. If a supplier is late, we complain. Lunch is usually something brought from home or ordered from the shop downstairs. We have a small pantry where we make tea about five times a day. It helps us get through the afternoon slump. It’s just a normal workplace with normal people trying to earn a living in the city. There is a lot of shouting from the street sometimes, but we are used to it by now. It is just how life is here.
