Our place is tucked away on Princep Street, which everyone knows is the heart of the electronics and parts trade in Kolkata. We are at P-27 on the second floor. It’s one of those old buildings where the stairs are a bit narrow and you can feel the history of the city in the walls. Electronic Control Components And Devices has been operating out of here for a long time. We still use GPO Box No 270 for a lot of our mail because it’s just the way things have always been done. The street outside is always a chaotic mess of handcarts, yellow taxis, and people rushing around with boxes on their heads. Inside, it’s a bit quieter, though the hum of the city never really goes away. We have shelves reaching all the way to the ceiling, packed with various components and devices. It’s a bit of a maze if you don’t know where things are kept. We spend a lot of our day checking lists and making sure the right parts go to the right people. There’s no air conditioning in the main storage area, so the big old fans have to work hard during the humid months. It’s a very traditional way of doing business, where we know our inventory by heart and handle everything manually. No one wears a suit here; it’s just plain shirts and hard work.
