Calcutta Neon

Calcutta Neon is situated at 94 Chittaranjan Avenue. This is a big, wide road, so there is always something going on right outside our door. We spend our days working with glass tubes and gas to make lights. It’s a specific kind of work that takes a lot of patience and a steady hand. Sometimes the tubes break while we are working, and we have to start all over again. The workshop is a bit cluttered with wires, transformers, and different colored glass pieces. It’s not the cleanest place in the city, but it is where the real work happens. We have been on this avenue for quite a while now. People in the neighborhood know where we are. We don't have a big front office or a receptionist. When you walk in, you usually see someone working with a torch or testing a light. It’s very hot in the summer because of the heat from the equipment and the lack of a breeze. We just get on with it. We don't have a brochure or a fancy sales pitch. If someone needs a sign, they come talk to us and we see what we can do for them. It’s a lot of hands-on labor. We’ve seen the city change quite a bit from our spot on the avenue. Trams and cars go by all day long. We just stay focused on the glass.
