B.S. Leathers is up on the first floor at 59 Gardener Lane. It’s near Khanquah Sharif Lane, which can be a bit tricky to find if you aren't looking for it. When you walk in, the first thing you notice is the smell of leather—it’s strong and stays on your clothes. We spend our days surrounded by hides and finished goods. It’s a lot of tactile work, feeling the texture and checking for marks. The stairs up to the shop are a bit steep and narrow, so moving heavy rolls of leather can be a real workout. We've got a couple of tables where we do the cutting and checking. It’s not the most organized looking place, but we have our own system that works for us. We mostly deal with leather products, and the work involves a lot of sitting and focused attention. Sometimes it’s quiet, and other times we’ve got people coming in and out all afternoon. We don’t have fancy marketing or a big website. Most people find us through word of mouth or because they’ve been coming here for years. It’s just a regular workplace where we try to keep the quality consistent. The fans hum all day to keep the air moving, and we usually have tea brought in from the stall downstairs. It’s a simple life here in the lane, focusing on the material and getting the orders finished. We just keep going.
