Our shop is right at 157A, Lenin Sarani. If you know Kolkata, you know this street is famous for all sorts of hardware and upholstery stuff. We specialize in rexine, which is that fake leather material people use for seats and covers. The shop is quite narrow and long, filled with huge rolls of material in every color you can imagine. The smell of the rolls and the adhesive is something you just get used to after a while. We spend our days measuring out lengths of fabric and cutting them with these big, heavy shears. It’s a lot of standing around and talking to customers who are trying to match a color for their bus seats or office chairs. Lenin Sarani is always chaotic, so there’s a constant background of traffic noise and people shouting. We don't have a fancy website or a marketing person. We just have our rolls of rexine and a counter that’s seen better days. Sometimes the rolls are so heavy it takes two of us to move them. We get a lot of regulars who have been buying from us for years. We aren't looking to change much about how we do things. We just stay open until the evening, roll up the materials, and head home.
