Rabindra Sarani is one of those parts of Kolkata that never really stops. We are on the third floor at 24-C, and getting up there can be a bit of a climb if the old elevator is having one of its bad days. Our space is filled with the smell of plastic and the sound of packing tapes. We deal with all sorts of plastic products and materials. The rooms are old with high ceilings, and we have lived with the same peeling paint for years. Boxes are stacked almost to the roof in some corners. Outside the window, you can hear the shouting of the market and the honking of the yellow taxis down on the street. It is a crowded area, but it is the heart of the trade here. We do a lot of our business face-to-face with people who have been coming to this building for decades. There is no air conditioning in the main storage areas, so we rely on the old ceiling fans to move the air around. We keep our records in thick registers and also on an old computer that takes its time to boot up. It is a traditional way of working that suits the location. We just focus on getting the plastic goods out to the customers who need them. Sometimes we have to navigate the narrow hallways carefully when new stock arrives in big bags.
