My shop is tucked away in Vandana Apartments over on Alipore Road. It’s not a huge showroom like the ones you see in the main market. I started Mamta Sarees because I’ve always liked fabrics and the way a good saree looks. Most of our customers are neighbors or people who heard about us from a friend. We have stacks of different materials piled up on the shelves. Sometimes it feels like there isn't enough space for everything, but we make it work. I spend a lot of time picking out the designs myself. It’s mostly just me and one helper most days. We don't really do big advertisements or anything like that. People just drop in when they have a wedding or a puja coming up. Sometimes the tea runs out because we spend so much time talking with the ladies who visit. Alipore is a nice area, though parking near the apartments can be a bit of a pain sometimes. I try to keep things simple. If someone wants a specific color, I'll go through all the bundles to find it. It's a lot of folding and unfolding, which can get tiring on the back after a few hours. But seeing someone happy with a purchase makes it alright. We’ve been at 22/1 for a good few years now and don't plan on moving anywhere else. It’s a quiet life but I enjoy it.
