A.F. Kalangi And Co has its office on the 1st Floor of Plot- 5C along Imdad Ali Lane. If you’ve ever walked down this lane, you know it’s one of those narrow Kolkata streets where everything feels very close together. Getting up to the first floor involves a narrow flight of stairs that can be a bit tricky if you are carrying boxes. Our space is mostly taken up by work tables and stacks of paper. We have been here for a long time, and the building definitely shows its age, but it has a lot of character. The windows stay open most of the day to let in whatever breeze we can get, though mostly it’s just the sound of the street coming in. We aren't a big corporation with hundreds of employees. It is just a small group of us who have worked together for years and know exactly how everything needs to be done. We spend a lot of time on our feet, moving between the different workstations. Sometimes the tea man comes by with his kettle, and we take a ten-minute break to talk about the weather or the local news. We don't have a fancy website or a marketing team. People find us because they know the name or they’ve been told where to look in the lane. It’s a modest way to work, but it suits us just fine. We just focus on the day’s tasks and the orders.
