A. C. Umar Cutting Co.

A. C. Umar Cutting Co. is located right at No. 2 Bentinck Street. This is an old part of the city, and our building has a lot of history to it. We do cutting work, mostly fabrics and materials for the local garment shops nearby. The space is filled with long wooden tables and very sharp shears. You have to be careful where you walk when we are busy. It's a bit noisy with the sound of scissors and the humming of the overhead lights. Bentinck Street is always crowded, so there is a lot of noise from the street coming in through the windows. We have been here for decades. My father worked here before me. The floors are worn down in the spots where we stand the most. We don't use big automated machines; we do a lot of it by hand because that is how we were taught. It takes a steady hand and a lot of patience. We get orders from all over the neighborhood. Sometimes the work piles up and we have to stay late under the dim bulbs. We don't have a fancy lobby or a receptionist. If you come to the door, one of us will just look up from the table and see what you need. It is honest work and it keeps us busy from Monday to Saturday. We like being in this part of town.
